The Importance of an Annual Health Exam
By: Mike Howie, North Oakville Today, March 2013
The team at HealthSense Medical Clinic (2983 Westoak Trails Boulevard) is reminding residents of the importance of having an annual health exam with their family doctor.
“A good family doctor will develop a relationship with you and keep track of you and your family’s medical history,” said Dr. Shabaz Khan of the HealthSense Medical Clinic. “And with new changes to the Annual Physical Exam, patients with more health problems will receive more time with their doctor.”
The Ontario government announced recently that the Annual Physical Exam would be redubbed a personalized health review, focusing more on a personalized approach with testing specific to the individual.
“Everyone should schedule an annual appointment for their a personalized health review,” Dr. Khan added. “Taking care of your health becomes especially crucial as you enter your late 40s and early 50s. It’s at this time when major issues can start: diabetes, heart disease, hormone disorders and more.”
“The number one reason people should have a family doctor is that they’re trained in preventative medicine,” explained Dr. Khan. “Family doctors can help identify and treat issues before they become serious, and when appropriate, a family doctor will refer patients to specialists for more advanced treatments.”
Beyond their training, however, family doctors become part of an ongoing relationship that will follow patients from birth to life’s later stages.
